In the days since the election, I've reflected on the tremendous effort that brought us together. It is gratitude that I feel most of all, and I want to share it with you. Your tireless work persuaded 32,964 of my neighbors--just over 49% of those who voted--to do me the incomparable honor of casting a ballot for my election. Whether you knocked on doors, made phone calls, wrote checks, or counseled me, I want you to know that your voice was heard. That means you prevailed on Election Day, even if I didn't.
I congratulate my State Representative, Daisy Baez, for having won a contest in which she demonstrated tenacity that will serve us well in Tallahassee. We don't agree about everything, but we both know how it feels to lose an election and live to fight another day. I commend her, and joyfully offer my help in advancing the interests of our community and state.
Now more than ever, after a season of division, I see reasons to keep working with the same drive I felt on the campaign trail. Three of those reasons live with me: my beautiful children, Jonas and Eden, and my wife Rebecca, who will always be my one particular harbor. For them, and for all of us blessed to call ourselves Americans, there is just so much work to do. My prayer is that we undertake it together, standing with the men and women we elected as they bridge their differences and try to govern. To paraphrase a man once accustomed to losing contests like mine, though passion may have strained, it must not break the bonds of affection that make us a favored land.
So, thank you. Your generosity and hard work have filled me with hope. I treasure your support and, wherever I go from here, will do my humble best to make you proud of having stood with me now.
May the One who stirs the better angels of our nature stir in you, and in our country, the same gratitude and sense of commitment I feel today.
